In the epic Mahabharata, Ganga, the divine river goddess, took human form and married King Shantanu of Hastinapur. Their union, however, carried a heavy curse and a promise. The Curse of the Vasus:
The Vasus, a group of eight celestial beings, once incurred a severe curse from the sage Vashishta for stealing his divine cow. Their punishment was to be born as mortals on earth. Desperate to avoid a prolonged human existence, they pleaded for a way out. The sage, moved by their plea, modified the curse: they would be freed from their mortal lives quickly except for the youngest, whose life would be marked by greatness and suffering.
Ganga’s Promise:
Ganga, agreeing to marry Shantanu under specific conditions, promised to drown each of their sons immediately after birth, thus liberating the Vasus from their mortal coils. Bound by her word and driven by the divine decree, she drowned seven of her newborn sons, returning them to their celestial forms.
Bhishma’s Fate:
The eighth child, however, was different. As she prepared to drown him, Shantanu, unable to bear the loss of another son, intervened. Ganga revealed the truth about the curse and her promise. The eighth son, Devavrata, was destined for a longer, significant life on earth. Raised by Ganga until he was ready, Devavrata returned to his father and eventually became Bhishma, the grand patriarch of the Kuru dynasty, renowned for his unwavering vow of celibacy and loyalty.
Significance and Legacy:
Ganga’s actions, though painful, were acts of mercy, freeing the Vasus from their mortal curse. Bhishma’s life, filled with valor and sacrifice, became a cornerstone of the Mahabharata, embodying duty and devotion.
